Argument1:Autonomous vehicles can drastically increase efficiency and lessen congestion
Congestion often happens due to unpredictable behavior, and thus accidents.
Autonomous vehicles can use advanced algorithms to predict traffic congestion andoptimize their routes. This means they can be utilized in such a manner so as to reduce heavy traffic and choose optimal routes so that majority of passengers are less likely to experience delays. This not only reduces the risk of accidents but also improves overall traffic efficiency.
A study by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute found thatautonomous vehicles could reduce congestion by up to 75% in certain urban areas.
Mainstream adoption of autonomous vehicles within China is likely and is already on the horizon. As of late 2021, EV penetration in China exceeded 20%, which has positively influenced perceptions of autonomous driving capabilities.
The market has already made big strides in beginning the mass production of autonomous vehicles loaded with high-definition maps, AI chips, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR), which remotely senses distances using lasers. This has driven the retail price of L3-ready vehicles down and more development will lead to more accessible pricing.
Argument2:Autonomous vehicles will significantly improve road safety
University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute: UMTRI - UMTR
Autonomous vehicles are equipped with a suite of sensors, including cameras, LiDAR, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, that provide a 360-degree view of their surroundings. This allows them to detect potential hazards, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, much earlier than human drivers can.
The data is processed using AI and powerful onboard computers that can react to potential dangers in real-time. This enables autonomous vehicles to make quick and accurate decisions, often faster than human drivers.
Autonomous vehicles can exchange real-time information about their location, speed, and intended actions with other autonomous vehicles, working in sync. This allows them to anticipate potential conflicts and adjust their behavior accordingly.
For instance, if one vehicle detects that it's approaching an intersection at a high speed, it can communicate this information to other vehicles in the area, enabling them to slow down or change lanes to avoid a collision.
Autonomous vehicles can also communicate directly with road infrastructure, such as traffic lights, signs, and sensors. This enables them to receive real-time traffic updates, identify potential hazards, and optimize their routes.
For example, if a traffic light is about to turn red, an autonomous vehicle can receive a warning and adjust its speed or position to avoid a sudden stop. This can lead to a significant reduction in accidents and fatalities on city streets. There is no comparable system that would work with human drivers.
Autonomous vehicles eliminate human error and variation. One of the leading causes of accidents is distracted driving. Autonomous vehicles are not susceptible to distractions like texting, eating, or talking on the phone.
Drunk driving and other forms of impaired driving are significant contributors to traffic fatalities. Autonomous vehicles cannot be impaired by alcohol or drugs, eliminating the risk of accidents caused by impaired drivers.
Sample Con Case
Argument1:AVs still have significant technological limitations and safety concerns
While autonomous vehicles have made significant strides, they are not yet perfect. The complexity of real-world driving environments, combined with the limitations of current technology, can lead to unexpected situations that autonomous vehicles may struggle to handle.
For example, adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can impair the performance of sensors and reduce visibility, making it difficult for autonomous vehicles to accurately perceive their surroundings. Additionally, sudden obstacles, such as debris or animals on the road, can be challenging for autonomous vehicles to detect and avoid in a timely manner.
For example, while Tesla's Autopilot system has some advanced capabilities, it has been involved in several high-profile accidents. These incidents highlight the limitations of current autonomous vehicle technology and the potential for safety risks.
Autonomous vehicles, while offering significant advancements in technology and safety, are also susceptible to cyberattacks.
According to Forbes, AVs can be vulnerable due to their reliance on 5G and lidar. The software and firmware that control autonomous vehicles are susceptible to software bugs or security flaws.
Hackers could exploit these vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access or control.
The US Department of Homeland Security has published reports highlighting the cybersecurity risks associated with autonomous vehicles, including the potential for hackers to manipulate vehicle control systems or compromise data privacy.
Autonomous vehicles collect and store large amounts of data, including personal information and driving habits. This data could be compromised by hackers, leading to privacy breaches and identity theft.
Argument 2:Widespread AV adoption will lead to job displacement and harms to the economy
The widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles would disrupt the labor market significantly. As autonomous vehicles become more prevalent, jobs such as taxi driving, trucking, and delivery services will likely become automated, leading to job displacement and economic hardship for individuals and communities that rely on these industries.
Companies are increasingly incentivized to adopt autonomous vehicles due to their potential to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The predictability of these vehicles can minimize inefficiencies, leading to substantial savings.
This advantage would make autonomous vehicles a compelling option for businesses, accelerating their adoption and exacerbating the threat of job displacement. This will harm millions of workers and have ripple effects on the economy.
Additionally, the transition to autonomous vehicles will require significant investments in infrastructure, training, and education. These costs could be a burden on cities and governments, particularly in less developed areas, potentially limiting the pace of adoption and exacerbating economic challenges.
A report by the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that up to 375 million jobs worldwide could be automated by 2030, including many jobs in the transportation sector.

Motion2We should ban the consumption of meat and all animal products.
SampleProCase
The consumption of meat and animal products is a cornerstone of many societies. However, we argue that this practice is fundamentally incompatible with our moral obligations to other sentient beings and the long-term sustainability of our planet. A comprehensive ban on meat and animal products is imperative to address the interconnected crises of animal welfare, environmental degradation, and public health.
Argument1:Animal Welfare
●Sentience and Suffering:Animals are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, fear, and distress. The factory farming industry subjects billions of animals to lives of intense suffering, confinement, and ultimately, violent slaughter.
●Moral Obligation:We have a moral duty to minimize suffering. A ban on meat and animal products would prevent immeasurable cruelty and uphold the principle of equal consideration for all sentient beings.
Argument2:Environmental Impact
●Climate Change:Livestock production is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution. By eliminating meat and animal products, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and mitigate the catastrophic effects of climate change.
●Land and Water Usage:Animal agriculture is an incredibly resource-intensive industry. A plant-based food system would free up vast amounts of land and water for sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and human consumption.
