To the NHSDLC community,Happy new year to everyone! After the conclusion of the fall 2023 semester the DLC has taken some time to review the recent tournaments, learn from other tournaments, and most importantly, listen to the advice of students and parents. We are determined to continuously improve all aspects of DLC tournaments and thank you for your support and feedback. Based on suggestions we received, the DLC plans to make some changes to tournament operations.
We wanted to take a minute to explain a few new things we are testing out during our winter tournaments:The Chinese New Year online tournament (January 27-28)andWinter online invitational (February 17-18).

第一个重大变化是组委会将在冬季邀请赛的公开组比赛中使用MPJ(Mutual Preference Judging)机制。
The first major change is using a mutual preference judging (MPJ) for the open division. MPJ allows students to rank their judges, and then uses the rating from two teams to match similarly ranked judges for the debate.
Before the winter tournaments begin, students will be given 24 hours to rate their judges into 4-6 categorieswith a certain number of judges required for each category. The DLC tournament staff will enter the judge ratings for each team. Tabroom will then take the ranking into consideration when selecting judges for a debate. While some tournaments make the lowest category a strike (cannot judge a team), we will not allow strikes as we begin testing the new MPJ system.
MPJ does not guarantee that a team will not receive a low ranked judge. First, both teams could hypothetically rank a judge lowand it would be a mutually agreed upon. Second, during power matched debates, the tabulation system usually gives preference to rounds where teams have stronger records. For those teams at the bottom of the bracket, they are more likely to get mutual D or mutual C judges.
To begin, we will only give teams in the open division MPJ. If the trial is successful, we will look at extending MPJ to the middle school division. However, we do not currently have plans to give the novice division MPJ. It’s our belief that novices more than others should learn to debate in front of any and all judges.
· Experience
· Student’s MPJ Ratings
· Availability
· Location
· Diversity (race/gender/etc.)
Second, we will take student's rating into consideration while we decide whether or not to hire a judge.
Every tournament that we use the MPJ system, students will be voicing their opinions on which judges we should hire. To be clear, students will not be the sole determinant of selection. Student rating will just be one consideration among others when deciding who judges.
In the future, the NHSDLC will make hiring decisions based on the following considerations: experience, student’s MPJ ratings, availability, location, and diversity (race/gender/etc.).
In addition to these changes, NHSDLC is introducing an initiative that actively involves parent and teacher judges in tournaments.
These individuals, often possessing untapped expertise, will be welcomed and compensated similarly to regular judges.Live training sessions will be provided to support these new judges, ensuring their readiness to contribute effectively to debate assessments.
This initiative aims to recognize and leverage the potential of a broader range of individuals within the community, enriching the quality and diversity of feedback in debates.
