Predicting the Evolution of Influenza and SARS-CoV-2 Viruses
University of Cambridge Department of Zoology
博导:Prof D Smith, Prof H Baylis
截止日期:全年可申
资助的博士项目(全球学生)
项目描述:
About the Project
Our research focus is to design and develop analytical, computational, and mathematical methods to understand the fundamental processes that govern the evolution of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses. In addition to the basic science core of the work, there is also the opportunity to translate this understanding into the prediction of future antigenic variants to guide phase II clinical trials of next generation influenza vaccines. Our research is highly interdisciplinary and involves substantial global collaboration with experimental virologists, immunologists and clinicians to quantify the selection pressures on influenza viruses in order to better understand their evolutionary dynamics, and to inform control strategies.
What the student will be doing:
The work in our group is theoretical and computational, in collaboration with experimental partners. Though this project is primarily computational, our group collaborates closely with experimental partners worldwide, e.g., Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands and the University of Wisconsin in the United States.
Supervisor: Derek Smith
Derek Smith is Professor of Infectious Disease Informatics in the Zoology Department at Cambridge University. He is an advisor to the WHO influenza vaccine strain selection committee, and is also involved in vaccine strain selection for other human and non-human pathogens for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Animal Health Organisation.
Derek’s research focuses on how pathogens evolve, to what extent this evolution is predictable, and determining public and animal health measures against such ever-changing pathogens. His group has developed vital computational tools for analysis and interpretation of antigenic variation and antibody responses to influenza and SARS-CoV-2. He has a long-standing interest in the effects of prior immunity and repeated vaccination. The combination of extensive knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology and immunology with novel modelling and computational analyses has enabled him to answer fundamental questions about virus evolution and antibody mediated protection. During the COVID pandemic Derek contributed to SAGE, the UK Government Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies and is a member of the US Government NIH SARS-CoV-2 Assessment of Viral Evolution (SAVE) Program.

Introduction to Blafar Ltd.:
Blafar Ltd. Vision and Mission: To design and deliver advanced biomaterial solutions for our global customers.
Blafar Ltd. has the expertise, knowledge and technologies in the design, development and manufacture of functionalised biopolymers, injectable hydrogels, and bio-inks from multifunctional ECM-based and synthetic biopolymers for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and medical applications, such as medical aesthetics, the delivery of stem cells/drugs, and 3D bioprinting.
Currently, the functionalised biopolymer product portfolio includes hyperbranched (HB) PEG-based polymers, functionalised hyaluronic acid (HA), collagen, gelatin, chondroitin sulfate (CS) and their derived biocompatible and customisable hydrogels and bio-inks. The goal is to achieve the leadership position in the functionalised biopolymers market by developing and manufacturing biopolymer products as key functional ingredients as well as developing end-use products including injectable hydrogels for cell/drug delivery and bio-inks for 3D bioprinting.
Blafar Ltd. is proud to develop and maintain industry-academia research partnerships to advance high-impact research for biopolymer products.
Introduction to Prof Wenxin Wang and Wang’s lab:
Prof. Wenxin Wang is currently a Full Professor at the Charles Institute of Dermatology, School of Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD), a member of UCD Academic Council, and a Guest Professor at the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, China. Prof. Wang and his research group have long been engaged in the research of controlled polymerization mechanisms, and the design and synthesis of novel functional biomaterials and their applications in bone, cartilage, and skin wound healing.
Prof. Wang’s scientific contributions and achievements have been recognized extensively at the global level reflected in 216 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers (Science Advances, Nature Communications, Nature Reviews Chemistry, JACS, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, Macromolecules, etc.), 5 book chapters, 34 patents, 140 conference abstracts and presentations, and 116 invited lectures and keynote presentations. His achievements have met the increased interest in the wider public community with publicity media activities (engaging 56 times in TV Documentary, Videos and Newspapers), for example in RTE, ‘The Sunday Times’, ‘The Irish Times’, ‘Science Daily’ and ‘Chemistry World’. As the founder, Prof Wang has launched 3 companies - Vornia Ltd (www.vornia.com, sold to Ashland - a Fortune500 US company in Jan. 2018, renamed as Ashland Specialties Ireland), Blafar Ltd (www.blafar.com), Branca Bunus Ltd (www.brancabunus.com).
