Phd Student Positions in Geotechnical Engineering
Supervisor:
Dr. Andy Leung obtained his PhD degree from the University of Cambridge and is currently an associate professor at PolyU. His research interests are structure-soil-pile interaction, application of machine learning in geotechnical engineering, and spatial variability of soil properties. Qualifications:
Applicants should have
A master's or bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering or other related subjects (geological/mining etc.), with a GPA higher than 80/100;
An overall score of at least 6.5 (at least 6 in writing) in the international English language testing system (IELTS); or a test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) score of 80 (at least 23 in writing) or above for the internet-based test or 550 or above for the paper-based test. Experience in data analysis, programming and publishing English research articles are considered as assets.
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and good use of oral and written English.

Normal Period and Scholarship:
For applicants with a bachelor's degree, the normal study period is 4 years. For applicantswith a master's degree, the normal study period is 3 years. Description of the projects:
The mining sector is vital for canada's economy but faces challenges in transitioning to sustainable practices amidst rising global energy demands and climate change. there will be four projects on the technological development of sustainable mining practices. multiple ph.d. and research assistant positions are available for these projects.
(1). renewable heating and cooling in mines;
(2)geothermal heat extraction from abandoned oil and gas wells;
(3) sustainable iron ore pelletization;
(4) microwave-assisted excavation and processing.
Essential Criteria:
Possess or be close to completing a bachelor's and/or master's degree in mechanical engineering, mining and materials engineering, civil and geotechnical engineering, chemical engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field.
- academic excellence: a minimum cgpa of 3.5 or equivalent in bachelor's and 3.8 or equivalent in master's degrees. for applicants applying directly after their bachelor's,the cgpa should be a minimum of 3.8 or equivalent.
- strong theoretical background in at least four of the following areas: heat transfer, fluid mechanics, numerical analysis, computational fluid dynamics (cfd), finite-element methods (fem), rock mechanics, mineral processing, and optimization.
- Demonstrated research experience through research projects/internships, conference presentations, and/or journal publications.
- Strong motivation to be involved in an industry-oriented project and a willingness to learn new concepts, methods, and computational tools quickly.Excellent written communication and presentation skills in english. knowing french is an asset.
