PhD in Beam-Steering Programmable Metasurfaces for Microwave Devices
University of Warwick| WMG

About the Project
Project Overview
We are seeking exceptional candidates with a passion for interdisciplinary research in the fields of Physics, Engineering, and Material Science for a fully funded 3.5-year PhD research project.
This exciting research project aims to develop beam-steering programmable metasurfaces capable of controlling electromagnetic waves in the microwave frequency range. The project focuses on the spatial control of the refractive index using external stimuli, such as temperature, to achieve precise beam-steering capabilities. The metasurfaces will be designed and fabricated using advanced materials, including relaxor ferroelectrics with unique properties suitable for this application.
As a PhD student, you will be involved in a cutting-edge research program at the intersection of Materials Engineering and Electromagnetics. You will explore the principles of metamaterials, electromagnetic wave propagation, and materials science to design and optimize the metasurface structures. The project will involve FEA modelling, materials formulation and synthesis, fabrication of programmable controlling system, and comprehensive materials and devices characterization using wide range of advanced techniques.
The project outcomes will have significant implications in the field of metasurface technology, culminating in the development of innovative electromagnetic devices capable of exerting precise control over the propagation of electromagnetic waves. By harnessing the spatial manipulation of the refractive index the project's findings will pave the way for the creation of metasurfaces that can dynamically and customisely manipulate the behaviour of electromagnetic waves. This level of control over wave propagation will have transformative impacts in various domains, such as wireless communication systems, radar technologies, imaging devices, sensing platforms, and beyond.
The successful candidate will receive a competitive stipend and full tuition fee support for the duration of the 3.5-year PhD program.
We look forward to welcoming a highly motivated and talented student to join our research team.
Candidate Requirements
Essential: At least a 2:1 degree in Undergraduate or Master's Degree in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, or related disciplines. Strong theoretical and experimental skills, along with a keen interest in interdisciplinary research.
Desirable: Prior experience in solid-state physics, electromagnetic wave propagation, materials fabrication, numerical modelling, and experimental techniques will be advantageous.
Funding and Eligibility
The studentship is open to home students with full awards for 3.5 years. Stipend at the UKRI rate (currently £18,622 per annum) and tuition fees will be paid at the UK rate.
Informal enquiries are encouraged and should be addressed to Dr Dmitry Isakov (D.Isakov@warwick.ac.uk)

About the Project
Are you interested in understanding how the social and political context in which companies operate shapes their decisions? Are you eager to learn how sustainability pressures translate to changes in firm and industry practices? The Strategy & International Business section at the Amsterdam Business School of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) invites applications for a PhD in Strategy & Organization to study the social context of organizational and market transformation for sustainability. We are looking for talented PhD candidates with the ambition to work and succeed at the highest international academic level.
Offer:
We offer a fully-funded PhD position in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, and an employment contract with a compensation package competitive at the European level that includes several fringe benefits. The preferable start date for this position is September 1st, 2024.
In addition, we offer a function in which your own initiative and input are strongly valued; rigorous training at ABS and in collaboration with partner schools and universities; close supervision by experienced, research-driven faculty: dr. Panikos Georgallis, Associate Professor (supervisor) and Prof. JW Stoelhorst (promotor) and potentially other members of the Amsterdam Business School; and a vibrant research environment that is truly international (more than 50% of our section’s faculty is international, the working language is English, and we encourage academic exchanges with leading schools globally).
Profile:
We are looking for candidates with a Master’s degree in management or a related discipline such as sociology, economics, or political science (candidates with a degree in other relevant disciplines who fit the profile are also encouraged to apply).
The ideal candidate will have a track record of outstanding academic results; excellent command of English, ideally with experience writing for a scientific audience; willingness and motivation to independently formulate research projects and carry them through to completion; explicit interest in scientific research and strong analytical/quantitative skills; an international orientation and motivation to pursue an academic career at a leading university; intellectual curiosity, eagerness to learn, and openness to criticism.
A Research Master´s or MPhil degree or equivalent and expertise in programming/statistical tools (e.g. R, Python, Stata) and automated content analysis are considered a plus but not necessary.
Employer:
The University of Amsterdam is consistently ranked among the world's best universities globally. It is a top-100 university in both the Times Higher Education Rankings and QS Rankings (top-20 in Europe). You will primarily work in the Amsterdam Business School that acquired the triple-crown accreditation (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS), which is awarded to only 1% of business schools worldwide.
The department of Strategy & International Business includes several faculty who do research and teach in the areas of strategy, organizations, innovation, international business, and sustainability. Members of the department have published their research in top-tier academic journals, such asAdministrative Science Quarterly,Strategic Management Journal,Academy of Management Review,Academy of Management Journal,Organization Science,Journal of International Business Studies,Journal of Management Studies,Organization Studies, andResearch Policy. Members of the department are also involved in teaching in undergraduate, masters, and executive programs and uphold strong relationships with industry and business.
Application:
We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis, with a deadline of April 20. For more information and to apply to this position please follow this link:https://vacatures.uva.nl/UvA/job/PhD-in-Strategy-and-Organization/790091102/
