These days, it is commonly cited thatthe bestmethod for solvingtraffic congestionand transportissuesistopersuade citizenstoinhabit metropolisesinstead ofsuburbanand rural areas.In my opinion, though this conceptcertainlyhas positive aspects, I do not think it is thebest method to solvethesetransportation-relatedchallenges.
The central tenet behind this concept ofcentralizingwork and living spaces to reduce traffic issuesis based onthe ideathatpeople will have no use for vehicles, and thus, fewercars will be seenon the road.This idea though,is likely to causeanotherproblemin place ofthe one it solves,namelyovercrowding,suggesting thatbyconvincing peopletolocate in onedense metropolitancenter,othersocietal problemswill arise.In fact,studies show that overcrowdingleads toa multitude ofsocial issues,such asincreaseddomestic violence,and so, whilecentrallypositioning accommodationand place of work together will reduce traffic,the trade-off inproblemsthiswould likely produce seem notto warrantsucha policy.
This is not to say, however, that the concept ofcentralization is incorrect.In fact,this concept isone of the most effective means tosolve traffic congestion,but instead ofcentrally locating all jobs and homes in one area, theycan be situated in smallerzones.Thishas occurred in Guangzhou, China,for example, wheremany of thesatellite towns, suburbs and rural areas surrounding the cityhave becomemini-centersof business and industryin their own right.Suchspecialization,coupled withan effectivepublic transport network,has given rise toresidents being able to live close to their work,yetwithout being overcrowded,whilesimultaneously, allowing themthe convenience of living nearthe city.
In conclusion, while theconcept of centralization isa sound proposalfor reducing traffic issues, persuading people toamassin one central area for both work and living will likely cause overcrowding;hence, I believebusiness specialization of satellite towns and surrounding metropolitan areas, connected byan effective public transport system, ismore practical in helping to solve traffic congestion.
