Admission requirements
To be considered for a PhD position at Erasmus School of Economics you are expected to meet the following requirements:
- MPhil or Research Master’s degree in Economics or Econometrics is preferred
— Candidates with an MSc or MA
degree are required to successfully complete 1 year of courses at the graduate school they are part of (Research Qualifications at the
Tinbergen Institute or courses at ERIM)
- Excellent study results for both the bachelor and master’s degree
- Interest in and strong motivation for scientific research explained in a statement of purpose.
- GRE test is required for all entering PhD students. Valid GRE (revised) General Test results are required from all PhD applicants (all 3 sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing). Successful applicants typically perform among the top-10% of test-takers on the quantitative part of the GRE; applicants with a Q score below 160 will not be considered.
- Excellent command of English (IELTS/TOEFL). Students whose native language is not English are therefore required to demonstrate English proficiency by:
— holding a degree from a Dutch university or an institution at which English is the language of
instruction, or
— scoring at least 100 on the TOEFL
iBT test or 7 on the IELTS test.

In addition to these formal requirements, candidates for the programme are selected on the basis of their CVs, academic references, and interviews with the potential supervisors.
Conditions of employment
Our PhD projects are fully funded and salaried positions, meaning that appointed PhD candidates are employees (promovendi) of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). EUR hasattractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8 per cent, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3 per cent, and a generous number of vacation days.
Successful candidates are appointed on a full-time basis for a duration of three of four years (depending on pre-education) with possible extension.
PhD candidates also benefit from the state-of-the-artresearch facilitiesand financial support from the ERIM Support Programme (ESP) that ERIM set up for a wide range of research-related activities such as conference participation, international job markets, external courses, scientific and educational literature, visits to international supervisors, and international research studies.

Mission
A Ph.D. position is available in Prof. Zhengmao Lu’s Energy Transport Advances Laboratory (ETA-LAB) at EPFL, Switzerland, focusing on electronics cooling. At ETA-LAB (etalab.epfl.ch), we strive to advance understanding and develop innovative solutions in thermal management, targeting high-performance cooling methods for electronic devices. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful research aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of electronics cooling systems.
What we are looking for
- Solid foundation in fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
- High motivation to explore advanced cooling technologies.
