EngD: Exploring effective and efficient use of CO2 for drilling of novel CFRP fibre stack materials (sponsored by Kennametal)
University of Sheffield|EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Machining, Assembly, and Digital Engineering for Manufacturing
博导:Dr Ellis Taylor, Dr Marco Colombo
截止日期:January 12, 2025 周天资助的博士项目(全球学生)
About the Project
This project explores how to use CO2efficiently in cryogenic machining, a technology that improves cutting performance and supports healthier, greener practices for workers and the environment.
Kennametal is a global cutting tool supplier, and many of their customers request outlet holes of just 0.2 mm diameter in their supercritical CO2fluid-delivered tools, but this presents a challenge for manufacturers. The research will use Computational Fluid Dynamics and validation experiments to investigate the best ways to deliver CO2, using novel fibre CFRP and metallic stack materials as case studies.
Key Questions:
Optimal Aperture Size
- What’s the optimal diameter of the supercritical CO2and liquid CO2outlet apertures to improve tool life and cutting performance while preventing ice crystal formation?
Coolant Flow Dynamics
- Investigate how the number and placement of coolant holes affect flow distribution and cooling efficiency. How does this change with larger hole sizes?
Heat Transfer Mechanisms
- Study how heat is transferred during cooling and how to make the process more efficient.
Chip Formation and Evacuation
- Look at how coolant delivery influences chip formation and removal during machining.
Why This Matters:
Optimised CO2systems can transform machining by:
- Extending tool life and cutting costs.
- Improving machining precision and surface quality.
- Reducing energy use and boosting production speeds.
Your research will support modern manufacturing strategies by using data and advanced simulations to design better tools and processes. These improvements will benefit industries by cutting costs, increasing efficiency, and delivering higher-quality products.

Electromechanical mapping of the gut using flexible electronics and cameras
University of Auckland | Auckland Bioengineering Institute
博导:Assoc Prof L Cheng
截止日期:全年可申
资助的博士项目(全球学生)
About the Project
Gut motility, or peristalsis, facilitates nutrient uptake and excretion of waste via mixing and breakdown of food. This is accomplished via coordinated mechanical contractions of the gut wall, which are governed by complex muscular, hormonal and neural inputs. In this project multi-modal techniques will be developed and utilised, involving flexible electronics and cameras, to gain an integrated understanding of the control mechanisms of the gut.
This project has a strong experimental component, where pharmaceutical and/or electroceuticals will be utilised to increase or suppress gut motility in animal models with potential translation to human experimental studies. The aim of the project will be to build a joint hardware and analytical framework to enable a better understanding of the pathways of gut control during normal and abnormal/disused function.
Desired Skills
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Engineering, Physics or equivalent. Experience with data analytics, camera systems, biosignal processing and machine learning. Some familiarity with MATLAB, Python, electrical engineering, control systems and experimental/clinical physiology would be desirable.
The Auckland Bioengineering Institute - breaking boundaries in bioengineering for more than 20 years
At the Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI), we apply engineering and technical innovation to advancing medical care, human capability, and understanding of human physiology. Our team of world-renowned researchers are working on everything from artificial intelligence avatars, to implantable devices, to digital models of the human body. Our focus on research excellence and commercialisation adds value to society and to the global economy.
Our research makes a real difference in the world. We’ve designed sensors to diagnose stomach disease without needing invasive surgery; developed a tiny wireless implantable device to measure brain pressure and save the lives of children with hydrocephalus; and we lead the world in building digital models of the human body which will enhance personalised medicine approaches for improved diagnosis and treatment.
Join our team of researchers for a postgraduate degree and together we can make a difference. Our graduates are amongst the most employable in the world - many either continue their career in research, find employment with industry leaders such as Rocket Lab or Fisher & Paykel, or launch their own startup companies.
Our students come from over 50 different countries and a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines, including Engineering, Medicine, Mathematics and Science.
