About the Project

A PhD studentship is available at the University of Cambridge, starting in October 2025 under the supervision of Professor Erwin Reisner in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry. We are looking for the most talented and dedicated candidates to join our international research team. We are committed to truly cross-disciplinary science and our team values candidates with undergraduate/master level studies in (organic, inorganic, physical) chemistry, materials science, or engineering.

The Reisner Laboratory develops innovations and technologies to convert solar energy and renewable electricity into sustainable fuels and organic platform chemicals for a circular economy using a unique cross-disciplinary approach. This PhD project will develop application strategies and prototype devices for the solar-powered valorisation of biomass and plastic waste streams. Supported by a world-leading team, the PhD students will thus design and develop solar-powered technologies to convert biomass/plastic waste into renewable fuels such as hydrogen and commodity chemicals. The Reisner Lab is an international and multidisciplinary environment where collaborations are strongly encouraged.

The assembly and engineering of the photon-to-chemical conversion devices will be achieved by integrating bespoke photocatalyst materials into suitable device configurations. Advanced materials design, physical characterisation and device engineering will be employed to optimise the technologies, to assemble the prototype devices and then scale-up the technology.

We invite candidates that have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class Master’s degree in one of the disciplines listed above to apply. The studentship targets the top candidates worldwide to join a multicultural team and will thus provide a 4-year scholarship.

Exoplanet Characterisation Predictions via Gravitational Microlensing

About the Project

This project will involve research into predicting the number and character of exoplanets using the GULLS microlensing simulation package for predicting exoplanet returns from the Nancy Grace Roman space telescope, and other current or proposed space and ground telescopes. This is an extension of the work described in the following papers:

  • Penny, Matthew T., et al. "Predictions of the WFIRST microlensing survey. I. Bound planet detection rates."The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series241.1 (2019): 3.
  • Johnson, Samson A., et al. "Predictions of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope galactic exoplanet survey. II. Free-floating planet detection rates."The Astronomical Journal160.3 (2020): 123.

As part of your application to a PhD at The University of Auckland, you have to complete aStatement of Research Intent. You have 600 words to provide a description of the proposed research. Include the scientific rationale for the project, the main research questions or knowledge gaps to be addressed, and an indication of the intended methodology. You have 200 words to explain why your previous research or professional experience is relevant to your area of interest, and you have a final 100 words for any other comments.
